Some of the top color trends today can make you think you’ve traveled back in time to the 1980s. Case in point: the neon accents that bounced back onto the trend radar at European fairs during January. Or the new batch of mid-tones that recall yesterday’s popular slate blue/mauve duos.
The strongest 80s throwback, however, is coming from a plethora of pastels. These light-value hues made a splash at Maison & Objet in Paris and at Ambiente in Frankfurt in the early part of this year. They were also a top trend at The Inspired Home Show in March. The variety of categories in which pastels have already appeared confirms their versatility and suggests an important role for this palette going forward.
At all of these events, pink led the way, with a larger share than any other shade. That said, lavender was on the fast track. We have been tracking the growth of this color for just over six months, and based on the number of new lavender introductions on both sides of the Atlantic, there is no reason to believe that this pale purple has reached its full potential. Certainly, there is more to come.
Blues were more likely to go cool, though warm versions hinted at a larger role at the European fairs. Meanwhile, most greens in this value tended to be minty. This is a countertrend to the warmth of the mid-tone and darker greens that made up the most important color story of the season at the Paris and Frankfurt venues.
Peach got a boost at the Inspired Home Show compliments of Pantone’s Color-of-the-Year designation. However, it was rarely included in the pastel palettes seen in Europe. Yellow had similar limited visibility.
