The Trend Curve team faithfully attends Christmasworld in Frankfurt, Germany each year. That's because it is among the best places in the world to see the newest trends in color and design for the Holiday season.
Messe Frankfurt , organizers of the Christmasworld fair, always creates a trend-exhibit showcase to inspire fair-goers who are retail buyers, shop owners or visual display specialists. For 2016, four themes were selected: Surreal Laboratories, Boho Treasuries, Quiet Harmonies and Playful Possibilities.
Surreal Laboratories
Surreal Laboratories:
Bizarre forms, synthetic colours and futuristic ideas work together to create some fascinating decorative effects, somewhere between science fiction (innovative technology) and festivity (traditional art and craft work). This futuristic scenario is accompanied by artificial, almost toxic colours, exciting glitz, glitter and play of light, with a lot of transparent materials, as well as shades of cool blues and grays.
Foils, acrylic glass, latex and high-gloss effects, foam-like surfaces, perforations and cutouts all find a place here. High-tech materials, which conduct light, together with fluid and futuristic forms, which are just as likely to come from a 3-D printer as from the hands of a master craftsman, seem, almost, to be from another world. To go with them there are pearls and sequins, crystal, porcelain and glass with hyper-modern visual qualities and iridescent effects, all of which take us by surprise.
Boho Treasuries
Boho Treasuries:
Glamorous materials, colours and patterns linked to nature combine a passion for decoration and luxury with a love of the simple and the natural. The designs include some striking flowers, blossom and leaves, evoking the era of flower power. The palette—including pumpkin yellow, pea green and beetroot coupled with sensuous, earth shades such as clay, light marble gravel and dark slate—emphasize the natural charm of the countryside.
Nature and the 1970s provide inspiration for patterns such as blossoms, leaves, clouds, mosaics or botanical and floral prints, line drawings and appliqué work. These are ideally complemented by paisley and jacquard patterns and tapestry effects. Simple materials such as cotton, canvas, clear glass and plain wood meet luxurious-looking materials such as brocade, embroidery, trimmings and sequins, as well as feathers, velvets, lurex and Tibetan sheepskin.
Quiet Harmonies
Quiet Harmonies:
Simple, plain materials, clean-looking surfaces and neutral tones celebrate the beauty of reduction. There is nothing complicated or exaggerated to spoil the easy, pleasant mood. To go with this, there is a colour selection of clear neutrals, from light and dark shades of gray to the warm tones of enamel white, vanilla and honey.
Plain, high-quality materials speak for themselves. Natural linen, wool and cotton, as well as soft felts, cashmere and merino go with elegant woods, glass, enamel, ceramics and porcelain. Everything is carefully worked and often bears indications of having been hand-crafted. Shapes remain muted and understated. The effect created by the design is simple, reductionist, minimalistic. Clean, textured surface ensure harmonious interchangeability.
Playful Possibilities
Playful Possibilities:
Vintage pieces and retro looks linked to aspects of modern design raise the everyday up to the level of something special. Unusual and unconventional motifs and figures, which often have no explicit connection with Christmas – as well as traditional motifs and designs, which have been interpreted in new and unconventional ways, create an original effect. Colours range from pine green, dark denim blue, coral and a milky mandarin to grey, sandy and dark brown.
The materials include denim in all its variants, mixtures, tweeds and burled effects, geometrical patterns and checks and extend to lacquered surfaces, plastics and press materials as well as wood – either natural or stained. Accurately drawn borders and quilting lines are used as a design idea – and not only for textiles.
